of question as to whether or not the romney tax plan adds up. the ryan folks i talked to want to keep it at 20,000 feet. they want ryan to stick with the romney-like message of jobs and the economy, sound centrist, don't get too far out there in some sort of ideological makers versus takers debate. >> everybody that's ever worked for many years in industrial company or any kind, joan, fears the guy like paul ryan to show up. he comes in and he's the efficiency expert. he's the cost cutter. he comes in looking for people to fire, you know? everybody hates him. can he make him look like that guy or can he wag his tail and seem like he's the cute younger guy and get away with that? >> i don't think he really needs -- you should think about wagging his tail and being the cute younger guy, chris, because then you really do have this amazing stature gap between the two men. there's an age gap, an experience gap. i don't think paul rye yaen can afford to look cute and fuzzy. i think this is teed up perfectly for joe biden. all the things we talked about last week we wished the president might have th

said, joe biden will sell barack obama, but paul ryan has to sell mitt romney. you can't really sell paul ryan, right? so he has to -- it's going to be interesting to see how well he does that. i think we agree that joe biden will do his job, will go in and will explain all those crucial moments of the obama presidency and how things worked out and what a great guy he is. >> so joe biden, i agree will do his job. joe, do you think that paul ryan will be allowed to do his job? because i think the problem has been that from the moment he was chosen, they then were hiding his signature elements. >> well, paul ryan's not the president. and i think mitt romney said it clearly, i'm the president, paul ryan -- >> so he won't be allowed to do his job? >> no more than somebody you hire as a production assistant is going to tell you what to say on the air. >> well, i will say, he sounds really almost -- he chose his youth when he said mitt romney is the president, and therefore i believe. >> who is he? why was he chosen? because he has incredible, brave ideas. >> hold on. so -- >> at a time wh

won that debate. after that debate, literally the next morning, they were calling mitt romney a liar, the campaign and the democratic groups saying he is a liar, he made the numbers up, the facts up. if paul ryan is smart, he will go right at the numbers and say, let's talk numbers. doesn't paul ryan have an advantage if they talk numbers? >>guest: there is no doubt about that. he is an excellent explainer, particularly as i said in the economic and budgetary issues. i think if joe biden is smart, he will try to pull this discussion as much as possible into some extraneous issues like the war on women type of stuff and foreign policy. there is something of a hurdle for paul ryan to get over in this debate, to sort of passion just the basic eye test on foreign policy for a vice presidential nominee. i think that biden, look, there has been so much out there that paul ryan will wipe the floor with biden, i think that the expectations game has shifted in the obama-biden cam favor particularly after mitt romney's strong performance last wednesday. the only thing i am worried about from t
